Files in Need of Shredding in the Retail Industry

Today, we’ll explain which files you’ll want to be shredding in the retail industry.

No matter what kind of business you have, there will be documents that you have to manage. Sometimes, there will be documents that have sensitive information on them, and these papers must be handled appropriately in order to protect the information that’s contained within them. The retail industry is no exception to this rule, and one method for protecting information is to shred files, when needed, but which files should you be shredding? Today, we’ll explain which files you’ll want to be shredding in the retail industry.

Customer Information Files

You never want to put customer information in danger. After all, there’s a lot of sensitive information that those in the retail industry may have on their customers, like customer mailing lists, credit card receipts, and register receipts that have personal information on them. Shredding these files helps protect customer information so they can continue putting their trust in you.

Employee Records

Not only will the retail industry have information on customers, but also on employees. Determining which employee documents to shred will depend on certain circumstances based on firm and source.

1-9s should be kept three years after hiring someone, but W-4s should be kept for one additional year. This can all get quite confusing, but generally, you should be able to shred all HR records six years after letting someone go from the company.

Business Receipts

In the retail industry, receipts will accumulate rapidly. It’s important for you to have a system for organizing these receipts if you don’t want your business to get quickly overwhelmed. The different receipts your business gets should be kept for a minimum of three years (sometimes longer whenever they’re related to taxes). Afterwards, you’ll want to have them properly shredded. It helps to have a professional document shredding company assist you with the shredding process.
