The Evolution Of Business Computer Backup Storage Systems

Computer backup systems have come a long way!

Computer backup storage is essential for keeping your business operating smoothly and productively every day. Thankfully, over the past few years, computer backup storage systems have continued to evolve into the sleek and quick marvels that they are today. Here are some of the ways that computer backup storage systems have evolved over the past few decades (and some information on their continued evolution as well!).

Older Than Old School

Today’s modern computer backup storage systems have their origins in the 1920s with the invention of the magnetic tape by Fritz Pleumer. Next came the magnetic drum invented in 1932 by G. Taushek in Austria. The first RAM computer memory was developed in the 1940s in the United Kingdom with a series of electrostatic cathode-ray tubes used to store information digitally. At that time, the RAM storage was able to store 1,204 bits of information.

The Age Of Advances

In the 1950s, the first magnetic core memory system was developed. It used tiny magnetic rings that were manufactured from ceramic to store information. The first hard disk was created in 1956, and the audio cassette came right after in 1963. These basic cornerstones of storing information are critical to the evolution of computer backup storage systems. In 1966, DRAM cells were created. These memory cells worked by storing information as an electrical charge in a bigger circuit.

Entering Modern Storage

In 1978, the revolutionary floppy disc was invented. This was inexpensive backup storage created from magnetic film and housed in a plastic shell. Over time, floppy discs continued to evolve to become less expensive and store more data at a time. The compact disc (CD) was introduced in the 1980s as another type of storage. CD-ROMs could also store digital data, starting in 1984, and worked by encoding digital data onto the physical surface of the disc.

Now We’re Here

As discs and floppy discs continued to advance, newer types of memory including compact flash memory began to arrive on the scene. The first flash memory card was introduced in 1995, in addition to the revolutionary DVD. The first USB drive was introduced in 1999 as a small and portable means of computer backup storage. Since then, we have seen the introduction of BluRay technology, holographic storage systems, and cloud data storage.
