Schools don’t just hand out papers to their students; they have their own fair share of documents that need to be managed. There will come a time, however, when certain files have outlived their usefulness, and it’s better to dispose of them. You can’t just recycle your files casually, however, as many school documents contain sensitive information that you don’t want other people seeing. Some school documents must be shredded, and we’re going to tell you which documents those are.
Student Records
Student records are among the most important files to protect. Within these documents, you’ll find information on students such as social security numbers, birthdates, and academic performances. Be sure that you follow the applicable federal guidelines when determining how to manage and dispose of these files. Typically, it’s good to destroy student records four years after they stop attending your facility.
Staff Data
Staff data, like student data, contains a lot of sensitive and confidential information. A lot of this information is similar to what you’ll find in student records, but there will be additional information such as phone numbers, email, and performance reviews. You don’t want this information to be stolen in the future, so shredding these school documents is required whenever employees stop working for your school.
Make Sure to Destroy Hard Drives & Devices Too
If you have hard drives or devices that aren’t useful anymore, you’ll have to destroy them permanently so that no one can breach them and get access to the data that they contain. Simply deleting old files or performing a reset won’t be sufficient because there will still be small pieces of information that remain, which still give thieves and hackers enough to utilize. You need to have these devices professionally destroyed in order to be as safe as possible with your confidential information.
